Sophie Sawicka is a painter based in Toronto, Canada.

In her paintings Sophie explores themes of memory and mysticism, blending the lines of abstraction and figuration to create a world where past and present co-exist. Through her vibrant and distinct palette, Sophie presents imagery with strong emotional resonance. Investigating the web of intricate memories and experiences that shape our understanding of self and reality.

Sophie is currently completing her BFA in the Drawing and Painting program at OCADU (2025). Sophie’s work most recently was shown in the ‘Embodied Narratives: Unveiling the Stories Within’ Exhibit at OCADU (Toronto). In the exhibit she presented a work from a larger series she completed titled: ‘Slipping out of Reach’. She is excited to be accepted into the Partial OCADU Showcase at the end of 2024.

Sophie is focused on building her portfolio and exhibiting her work in Toronto. She is actively searching to participate in exhibitions and expand her practice into the public. This year she is working on completing her thesis and showing at GRAD-EX in May 2025

What artists do you admire right now?

I really admire Rae Klein's work. I am very inspired by her paintings and the ambiguity behind them. I appreciate the emphasis on allowing the viewer to create their own interpretation and experience of her work, without providing too much information.

Why is art important to you?

For me art can become a way to access our internal worlds, which are often times overlooked or misunderstood. Art work that has moved me is artwork that is introspective, and asks us to look inside of ourselves.
